The UK government has published its Heat Pump Investment Roadmap which outlines the important role heat pumps have in decarbonising homes across the UK. Heating is responsible for more than 33% of UK carbon emissions and therefore it is vital to decarbonise the heating of over 30 million homes in just over 25 years to meet the net zero 2050 target.
Goal 🎯
The government estimates that heat pump installations will rise from 55,000 a year in 2021 to 600,000 a year by 2028. The increase is expected to require an investment of around £28 billion across the supply chain.
Operation ⚡️
There are different types of heat pumps including air, ground and water. They all use heat transfer technology. Air source heat pumps are most common due to their easy installation, they transfer heat from the external air into water. Because heat pumps don’t create the heat source, they can have a high efficiency of around 300%.
Heat Pumps – Benefits ♻️
Heat pumps have several benefits to households. They can lower your fuel bills; they are better for the environment, and they can provide heat and a hot water supply.
Support 🤝
There are various policies aimed at supporting the growth of the heat pumps such as grants of up to £7,500 to households wanting to install heat pumps.
Heat Pumps – Criticism ❌
The government has received some criticism with regards to its heat pump ambitions. Many argue that heat pumps remain too expensive for targets to be achieved. The average heat pump costs around £10,000 which means the price would need to decrease by 25-50% within two years for the goal of 600,000 heat pumps per year by 2028 to be met.
Furthermore, on average heat pumps can still be more expensive to run and therefore tax relief and incentives are required to make a more level playing field between gas heating and heat pumps to make them more financially attractive to households.
